Solar street lights are raised light sources which are powered by solar panels. They are generally mounted onto the lighting structure or integrated into the pole itself.

The solar panels charge a rechargeable battery which now powers a fluorescent or LED lamp during the night.

As climate change continue to have a more severe impact on the world’s safety and the health of our economies, energy efficiency continues to grow as a priority for governments.

This priority exists alongside the constant struggling of budgeting and saving money where possible.

With the continued invention of new technologies, these two aforementioned priorities have merged: energy efficiency plans that also provide financial savings.

One area that shows immense promise is that of public street lighting.

Currently there are 315 million street lights in the world today and recent research by Northeast Group, LLC estimates that by 2026 that figure is likely to 359 million street lights.

With such focus on the question of how to improve street lighting efficiency while also saving money it is no wonder why solar street lighting (and LED street lighting) is expected to grow into a $70 billion market.

Features of Solar Street Light:

Solar street lights consist of four main parts:

1. Solar Panel
2. Lighting fixture
3. Solar rechargeable battery
4. Pole

a) Solar panel

The solar street light working principle cannot be effective without a solar panel. In other words, this is an important part of each solar street light.

The solar panel is responsible for converting solar energy, which it collects during the day and stores in the solar batteries, into electric energy. A solar street light can either have mono-crystalline or poly-crystalline.

As compared to poly-crystalline, the mono-crystalline solar panel’s conversion rate tends to be much higher.

b) Lighting fixture

Most solar street lights today use LED technology according to numerous researches. It is therefore impossible to talk about the component of solar street lights without mentioning LED technology.

High lumen LED lights are optimized to achieve maximum efficiency while maintaining low energy consumption.

A lack of warm-up time in LEDs also allows for use of motion detectors. The rate of energy consumption of the LED fixture is at least 50% lower compared to HPS fixtures.

c) Solar rechargeable battery

Just like lighting fixture, the solar street light working principle cannot be effective without solar street rechargeable batteries.

During the day, these batteries are meant for storing electric energy from the solar panel.

Generally, solar street light is known for having two kinds of batteries: lead-acid batteries and gel cell deep cycle batteries.

d) Pole

The pole is the final component to any successful solar street light system. The pole needs to be strong enough to support the solar and tall enough for the solar to mount above the fixture, but ensuring the fixture is mounted at the correct height for effective spread of light spread on the ground.

The pole has to be strong so as to meet wind load requirements with the solar. The poles are available in steel, aluminum, fiberglass composite or concrete and can either be direct burial or anchor base.

Transformer base poles can also be used for some applications. Understanding what goes into the pole design can ensure that your pole will standup to the test of time.

Types of Solar street light system

1. Off-Grid Split Type Solar Street Light System

Most of the solar light projects are usually in areas where there is no electricity wiring. The installation of these wiring is tough and require lots of hours, manpower, and capital.

Solar street light, which does not require any wiring, is a better option.

In Off-grid Split Type Solar Street Light each pole has an independent unit. It contains the power source (i.e. solar panel), a light controller, a battery, and a LED light. This unit is suitable for use anywhere there is sunlight.

2. Grid-Tied Solar Street Light System

(i) Grid-Tied (Single Inverter)

The Grid-Tie (Single-Inverter) Solar Street Light is the one where a sun-oriented arrangement is set up in a focal area.

These gives energy to an arrangement of LED lights. The transmission lines give fuel to these lights.

(ii) Grid-Tied (Micro-Inverter)

The Grid-Tie (Micro-Inverter) Solar Street Light have individual inverters on each pole for LED solar street light. In this, there is no need for big solar arrangement.

(iii) Solar and Wind Hybrid Solar Street Light System

This solar street light system is a combination of solar and wind energy. The production of energy is more when both are combined because the wind and sunlight both produce energy as different times.

3. All-in-one Solar Street Light

This solar street light system has automatic motion sensors with settings that makes the light dimmer and brighter as people walk under it. This technology helps it to save energy.

The All-in-one Solar Street Light System consists of a solar panel, light controller with built-in motion sensor, lithium battery, and LED light.
